POWHATAN FOOD PANTRY

The Powhatan Food Pantry is located at 2500 Batterson Road, accessed through the St. John Neumann Catholic Church entrance.  It is operated by the volunteer efforts of the Coalition of Powhatan Churches.   The Powhatan Food Pantry is also a Partner Agency of the Central Virginia Food Bank, which is itself a member of Feeding America, the nation’s food bank network.

The purpose of the Powhatan Food Pantry is to reduce food insecurity in Powhatan County by providing supplemental food to needy families who are residents of Powhatan County.  We also provide United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) food to households that meet USDA guidelines.   Our goal is for all Powhatan County residents to have access to enough safe and nutritious food for an active and healthy life, to be free of worry about where their next meals will come from, and to be relieved of the burden of choosing between eating and paying important bills such as rent, health care or utilities.

Food is normally distributed Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10am - noon and Thursday from 5pm to 7pm.  The Powhatan Food Pantry is an equal opportunity provider.

To volunteer or for more information please e-mail jimtubbs25@gmail.com

As this is a self-funded ministry, donations of food or money are always appreciated.  You can drop off donations at the Pantry during normal operating hours or at St. John Neumann Catholic Church between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday.  Checks should be written to St. John Neumann with “Powhatan Food Pantry” in the memo section.   You may also donate online by going to this link:

HISTORY AND MISSION

The Powhatan Food Pantry is operated by a coalition of approximately 55 churches of varying denomination in Powhatan County and housed on the front parcel of St. John Neumann Catholic Church.  Of the 55 Churches that are “members”, approximately 25 are actively monthly in some manner

Parishioners of St. John Neumann’s parish started the “Hen Pantry” which operated out of a small walk-in closet in the original section of the Church and was expanded in 2011 with the construction of the Pantry as it stands today. The Powhatan Coalition of Churches joined their pantry with ours.

The building is approximately 2,000 square feet, replete with built-in refrigeration and freezer units, shelving for canned and dry goods, as well as produce and work space for packaging grocery items for delivery.  Directly next door is an industrial kitchen, approximately 525 square feet which serves the volunteers work space for preparing food, baked goods and specialty candy assortments that aid in the funding of the operation.

The number served has grown from 205 to 365 in the year that we have been open and working together.

The Powhatan Food Pantry is a vital ministry in our County and serves our neighbors in need.  It is operated strictly on a volunteer basis that includes collection of food, storage, rotation, bagging and delivery.  The time and effort by those committed to feeding the hungry of Powhatan County is admirable and considered a blessing to all those involved.
