The History of St. John Neumann Catholic Church
While most parishes establish a church before a school, St. John Neumann in Powhatan County, Virginia began in a unique way—through education. Its roots trace back to the work of the Drexel family, particularly Saint Katharine Drexel and her sister Louise Drexel Morrell. In 1894, the Morrells purchased Belmead, a 1,600-acre estate, where they founded St. Emma’s Industrial and Agricultural Institute for young Black men. In 1899, Saint Katharine opened St. Francis de Sales for young Black women. These schools became the foundation of the first Catholic community in Powhatan.
In 1928, Mrs. Morrell built St. Edward’s Chapel in memory of her husband. It served students and local Catholics until its destruction in 1970. Following desegregation and the closure of St. Emma’s, the parish community relocated, with records maintained at St. Francis de Sales, which became the parish church.
In 1976, the parish was renamed St. John Neumann in honor of John Neumann. The community worshipped in several locations before settling at the current Flat Rock site, dedicated on November 2, 1986.
The parish began with a modest multi-purpose building serving as both worship space and social hall, along with a kitchen, classrooms, a chapel, offices, and a large narthex. Over time, additional building campaigns expanded classrooms, offices, and a dedicated worship space, reflecting the generosity and commitment of parishioners.
As the parish has grown, it has added a Columbarium and Prayer Garden, expanded parking, and created outdoor spaces for fellowship and reflection.
Most importantly, St. John Neumann Parish continues to grow in its mission: to serve Christ and one another by living out the Gospel through Christian love.
